At Ash Green, it is our aim that the PSHE curriculum will nurture pupils’ self-belief and well-being whilst preparing pupils to take a role as an active participant in society. Through the development of fundamental skills and values such as honestly, kindness, trust, responsibility, friendship, self-control, empathy, respect, and tolerance, we believe children will flourish socially, morally, spiritually, and culturally.  At a school with a high percentage of disadvantaged pupils, we aim through the development of their self-awareness physically, emotionally, and socially to eliminate some of the barriers to learning experienced by many of our pupils. Ultimately enabling each child to reach their full potential pastorally and academically.

In an ever-changing society, we aim to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. In order to maximise home-school learning opportunities and encourage parents and carers to take an active role in their child’s learning, we use half termly Knowledge Organisers in Early Years and unit-based Knowledge Organisers in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. These Knowledge Organisers identify key knowledge and skills as a basis for discussion points and are shared on the online learning platforms of Seesaw and EEXAT.

Implementation:

Below is a brief summary of the implementation of the PSHE curriculum at Ash Green. Please refer to the PSHE Policy and Scheme of Work for a more thorough break down of how the PSHE Curriculum is implemented at Ash Green from Early Years to Year 6.

Nursery – In Nursery PSHE is taught as an integral part of topic work and is embedded throughout the curriculum. The objectives taught are the Personal, Social and Emotional statements from the ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ document and the PSED Early Learning Goals.

Reception, Key Stage One, and Key Stage Two - PSHE is taught across the school from Reception through to Year 6 on a weekly basis. As a school, we follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme which is a sequential and structured programme equipping pupils with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health.

Our PSHE curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to nurture and enable all children, regardless of background, ability or additional needs, to flourish and become the very best version of themselves. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear and sequential skills and knowledge progression, building on what has been taught before and towards clearly defined, agreed end points. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately in order maximise learning for all pupils. Jigsaw PSHE directs our aim on developing the “whole child” through a spiral curriculum approach to developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of;

  1. Being Me in My World (Autumn One)
  2. Celebrating Difference (Autumn Two)
  3. Dreams and Goals (Spring One)
  4. Healthy Me (Spring Two)
  5. Relationships (Summer Two)
  6. Changing Me (Summer One)

Impact:

By the time our children leave Ash Green they will:

  • Be able to recognise the importance of keeping their bodies healthy and ways in which to do so
  • Be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially, and morally responsible, active members of society
  • Recognise, understand, and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty in their everyday life
  • Appreciate, respect, and celebrate difference and diversity
  • Be able to recognise, understand and manage their emotions
  • Be able to understand and look after their mental health and well-being
  • Be able to develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers and adults both now and in the future.
  • Have a positive self-esteem and a good level of resilience
  • Understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age-appropriate level
  • Have respect for themselves and others

Leaders in school, including the PSHCE Managers regularly measure the impact of our PSHE curriculum through Deep Dives and the monitoring of teaching and learning, assessment and on-going self-review. We survey staff, pupils and parents, undertake learning walks, carry out both formal and informal monitoring in order to sample typicality, and also scrutinise samples of work produced by pupils both in school, as well as remotely. We have an established system of Governor review with a Standards and Effectiveness Committee who oversee our curriculum. Governors on this committee receive regular reports, and discussions are held at this committee meeting on successes and upcoming priorities. Based on monitoring and Deep Dives, clear next step priorities for PSHE are agreed as part of a PSHE action plan.

The impact will be that our pupils will be academically prepared for the next phase of their education, are motivated to succeed and achieve, and are equipped with all the personal skills to do this. The PSHE curriculum will be rooted in excellence and enjoyment which will promote achievement, collaboration, individual and collective pride, confidence and high standards of behaviour for learning.
